global warming is expected to wreak havoc on the next 45 years of our lives -- and we know what's causing it.
Fact: global warming is caused by burning fossil fuels. fossil fuels are burned all over the world to generate electricity and power transportation every moment of every day. Power plants, school buses, motorcycles, cruise ships, airplanes ... everything we use burns fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas, diesel) creating global warming emissions -- somewhere in the world.
Scary Global Warming Factoids
(these are very prevalent predictions arrived at via scientific consensus)
In our lifetimes, Planetary Warming will cause:
increased frequency of violent storm systems; such as Hurricane Katrina
total extinction of the world's coral reefs by 2025; “no more seafood by 2048”
extreme drought, extreme rains, loss of seasonal regularity; subsequent break down of our food chain
dramatic flooding of the world's coastal cities, including: New York, Houston, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Rio, Tokyo, Sydney, Barcelona, Amsterdam ...
loss of 50% of our planet's biodiversity by the end of this century
The primary ingredient in the global warming emissions problem is CO2 (Carbon Dioxide). 100 years ago, with 0 power plants and only 8,000 cars on the road, the U.S. was hardly a contributor to the planet's CO2 emissions. But today ... things are different.
Today we use coal-fired electricity and petroleum-fed transportation without thinking about it. Our sense of freedom, security, mobility, and wealth seems to depend upon on burning fossil fuels. Without electricity -- there's very little to do in life, and what about economic "growth?"
THE GOOD NEWS
We understand what's causing the problem, we can stop compounding the problem... The pathway towards eliminating all global warming emissions is clear. By employing energy efficiency and replacing carbon burning (fossil) fuel sources with clean, zero emissions fuel sources, we can stop making a terrible problem worse. Once more, planting trees and restoring grasslands is our most efficient way to utilize nature as a CO2-eating asset. Green plants absorb CO2 and turn it into oxygen.
Restated, the solutions are simple. We must:
1. Implement Energy Efficient Technologies
2. Convert to Clean Energy Technologies
3. Invest Heavily in Carbon Offsets
We can do this!
The average citizen is concerned. Industry & Business are leading the way to reduce their climate impacts ... not just due to popular demand, not just because it makes economic sense, but because of the humanity of the thing. POLITICAL OFFICIALS CUTTING CARBON EMISSIONS
Arnold Shwarzenegger
California was previously known as the largest energy consumer in the world. However, things have dramatically changed -- and the terminator is leading. On June 1, 2006, Governor S committed to the following
-By 2010, California emissions will be reduced to 2000 levels;
-By 2020, California emissions will be reduced to 1990 levels;
-By 2050, California emissions will be reduced to 80% below 1990 levels.
Will Wynnn
Austin Mayor Will Wynn announced the world's most pro-active "Climate Protection Plan" last month. Notable quotes, "We have to go backwards in our energy plan, and that have only a few years to act." "I for one would like to be here in 45 more years..."
AUSTRALIA
Australia became the first nation to ban energy wasting incandescent light bulbs last month... "Minister Malcolm Turnbull said banning incandescent light bulbs would help trim 800,000 tons from Australia's current emissions level by 2020 and lower household lighting costs by 66 per cent."
