  
We need water for life. Everybody knows that. Meanwhile, indications are piling up all over the United States (and around the world) that rapid population growth and aggresive industrial development are disrupting the very water tables and water cycles we depend on for life.

According to a recently released U.S. Geological Survey report (2004), water problems are prevalent across all of the US. On both coasts, saltwater is intruding into coastal groundwater. Due to widespread urbanization and population growth, water is becoming scarcer everywhere in the United States -- particularly in the West, where irrigation and groundwater mining are essential to survival.
